Windows NT 4.0
REMEMBER, all changes performed on Windows NT,
must be accomplished using an account with administrative rights.
Step 1:
Open the Windows NT Control Panel. The Control Panel is accessible by either
a: by double clicking the "My Computer" icon on the desktop.
b: or by clicking the "Start" button, then click the "Settings" button.
In order to connect to the internet, you must
have a modem. You can Verify that a modem is installed by clicking on the "Modems" icon under the Control Panel.
If you do not have a modem installed, you can also add one by clicking on the "Add" button. You may require additional drivers if the modem is not supported natively by Windows.
Step 2:
In addition to a modem, Windows NT4 also requires Remote Access Service (or RAS) to connect to the internet. Open Control Panel and double click on the "Network" icon, then select the services tab.
Step 3:
If you do not see Remote Access Service listed, it will need to be added. This will require the Windows NT4 CD to copy addition files.
Step 4:
After the files are copied, you will need to select your modem.
Step 5:
Click the Configure button to configure the modem for RAS. The only option necessary for dialing into Great Barrier Reef is Dial Out Only. Click the "OK" button when finished.
Step 6:
Click the Network button to define the network type for RAS. The only network type necessary is TCP/IP. Click the "OK" button when finished.
Step 7:
Click the "Continue" button to finish installing RAS.
Step 8:
Now that RAS is configured, Dial Up Networking should be configured to establish connection to EmsaNet. First, click on "My Computer" from the desktop and then click on the "Dial Up Networking" icon. Next, click on the "New" button to create a new dial up networking connection. Enter a name for the phone book entry. For example, EmsaNet would be self explanatory.
Step 9:
Click the "Next" button. The "I am calling the Internet" and "Send my plain text password if that's the only way to connect" options are the only two necessary to connect to the internet.
Step 10:
Click the "Next" button. Enter the phone number to dial the internet. Check our getting started page for the dialup number of your location.
Click the "Next" button to continue.
Step 11:
Click the "Next" button to continue.
Step 12:
Click the "Finish" button.
Step 13:
Click on the "More" button and select "Edit entry and modem properties" to finish configuring the EmsaNet dialup connection.
The "Basic" tab should list the
appropriate entry name, phone number, and modem.
Step 14:
Select the "Configure" button to verify the modem settings. The default options should work fine for most Windows supported modems.
Step 15:
Click the "OK" button when finished. Then, click the "Server" tab. The only protocol needed is TCP/IP. The "Enable software compression" and "Enable PPP LCP extensions" options should be selected as well.
Step 16:
Click on the "TCP/IP Settings" button to verify TCP/IP settings for the dialup networking connection. Let the Server assign both the IP address and name server addresses. Select both the "Use IP header compression" and "Use default gateway on remote network" options.
Step 17:
Click the "OK" button when finished. The connection is now configured and ready to use. Select the "Dial" button when ready to connect to the internet.
You will need to enter the appropriate
username and password while making the connection. These were supplied to you when you signed up for the service.
